GATE Marks Calculator

A GATE response sheet is a list of answers. It is not yet your marks, and marks are not yet the score out of 1000 that IITs and PSUs use. Enter correct and wrong MCQs plus NAT/MSQ from the sheet — or type marks you already have — and this GATE marks calculator applies the official marking scheme and the GATE score formula.

Built for GATE 2026 and the same 65-question, 100-mark pattern used in recent years. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing from the response sheet is uploaded.

After results, replace Mq and Mt with the official figures for your paper. Until then, the starting values are typical — they are not a prediction of GATE 2026 statistics.

How to use this GATE marks calculator

  1. Choose response sheet or marks. Use the response sheet when you have counts of correct and wrong answers. Switch to marks if GOAPS or a coaching key already gave you a total out of 100.
  2. Pick the paper and category. CS, ME, EE, CE, EC, and DA are the usual searches. Category only changes the qualifying check. The score formula always uses the general Mq.
  3. Count 1-mark and 2-mark questions separately. Wrong MCQs are the only answers that lose marks. Correct NAT and MSQ add marks with no penalty. A wrong or blank NAT/MSQ is simply zero.
  4. Set Mq and Mt when you have them. Those two numbers turn marks into a GATE score out of 1000. Then read the rank band as a range, not as AIR.

GATE marks vs score vs rank

People search “GATE score checker” and “GATE marks to rank calculator” for three different numbers. Mixing them up is how a 55 looks like a 550, or a score of 650 is treated as a rank.

  • Marks (out of 100). The paper total after negative marking, or the normalised mark if IIT ran more than one session. This calculator’s first result is that figure.
  • Score (out of 1000). The number on the scorecard. It is not marks × 10. A general candidate at the qualifying mark is mapped to 350. The top 0.1% mean is mapped to 900.
  • Rank (AIR). Position in that paper only. CS and ME have far more candidates than AE or ST, so the same score is not the same rank. The band here is an estimate from recent high-volume papers, scaled down for smaller ones.

GATE marks calculator from a response sheet

After the exam, GOAPS shows your recorded answers. Match them to the official key. Then split every question into 1-mark or 2-mark, and into MCQ versus NAT/MSQ. Do not put NAT or MSQ into the “wrong MCQ” boxes — those two types never take marks away.

Question typeCorrectWrong
1-mark MCQ+1−1/3
2-mark MCQ+2−2/3
1-mark NAT or MSQ+10
2-mark NAT or MSQ+20

MSQ is all-or-nothing: every correct option, and no extra option. A partial selection is treated as wrong and still scores zero, not a penalty. NAT answers are accepted in a small range; if you are unsure about a borderline value, run the calculator with and without that question.

GATE score formula — score calculator out of 1000

IIT uses the same GATE score formula each year. For GATE 2026 it is unchanged: a linear map from marks onto a 350–900 spine, then a clamp to 0–1000. This is the GATE score calculator step.

Score = Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) ÷ (Mt − Mq)Sq = 350 · St = 900
  • M — your actual marks, or normalised marks for a multi-session paper.
  • Mq — general-category qualifying marks for that paper (at least 25, or μ + σ if that is higher).
  • Mt — mean marks of the top 0.1% of candidates, or of the top 10, whichever group is larger.

A score of 350 means marks exactly at the general cut-off. A score of900 means marks at the top 0.1% mean. Scores above 900 appear only when marks exceed Mt. Candidates below Mq still receive a score; it simply falls under 350.

OBC-NCL and EWS qualify at 90% of the general Mq. SC, ST, and PwD qualify at two-thirds of it. Those relaxed cut-offs do not change Mq inside the formula. They only change whether you are marked qualified.

Worked example

The sample button fills these counts. They total 55 marks, which is the M in the score example that follows.

SectionAttemptsSum
1-mark12 MCQ correct, 3 MCQ wrong, 6 NAT/MSQ correct(12 + 6)×1 − 3×1/3 = 17
2-mark12 MCQ correct, 3 MCQ wrong, 8 NAT/MSQ correct(12 + 8)×2 − 3×2/3 = 38
Total marksPositive 58 − negative 355 / 100

With M = 55, Mt = 85, Mq = 25:

Score = 350 + 550 × (55 − 25) / (85 − 25) = 350 + 275 = 625

625 is a “good” band: above the 350 qualifying floor, well below the 900 top-mean mark. The rank band then depends on the paper you selected. CS is treated as a high-volume paper; a smaller paper tightens the same score into a better AIR range.

GATE 2026 paper pattern

GATE 2026 was organised by IIT Guwahati. The question paper stayed at 65 questions and 100 marks. Thirty papers were conducted, including the newer Data Science & AI (DA) paper and sectional papers under XE, XH, and XL. A candidate may appear in one paper, or in two where the combination is allowed. The score stays valid for three years from the result date.

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Aptitude10 (5 × 1-mark, 5 × 2-mark)15
Subject (+ engineering maths where applicable)5585
Total65100

The exact split of MCQ, MSQ, and NAT changes by paper and year. Roughly half to three-fifths of the marks usually sit on MCQs with negative marking. Guessing a 2-mark MCQ without eliminating options has a negative expected value. For a generic wrong-answer penalty on other exams, use thenegative marking calculator.

GATE marks to rank calculator — how to read the band

Rank is not in the official score formula. It is produced later from the full list of scores in that paper. The band on this page is a reading guide from recent high-volume papers (CS, ME, CE, EE, EC, DA), scaled down for mid-size and small papers.

Score / 1000How students usually read it
800 – 1000Excellent. IIT / IISc M.Tech shortlists are realistic in popular papers; PSU lists are strong.
650 – 799Very good. Competitive NITs and many PSU applications stay in range.
500 – 649Good. A wide set of M.Tech programmes; PSU eligibility still depends on that year’s cut-off.
350 – 499At or above the general score floor. Admissions and jobs then follow paper, category, and that year’s list.
Below 350Below the general qualifying map. Check the category cut-off on marks before you treat it as not qualified.

A PSU that asks for GATE 2026 will publish its own cut-off by paper and discipline. A 650 in CS is not a 650 in XE. Treat the band as a conversation starter, then use GOAPS for the rank that counts.

Mistakes that change the total

  • Putting NAT or MSQ into wrong MCQs. Those questions never deduct marks. A wrong NAT is the same as a skip for the total.
  • Using marks × 10 as the GATE score. 55 marks is not 550. The formula maps 25 → 350 and the top mean → 900, so 55 with Mt = 85 and Mq = 25 is 625.
  • Leaving Mq and Mt on defaults after results. Official score uses the paper statistics IIT publishes. Replace both numbers from that PDF or from GOAPS.
  • Comparing a raw multi-session mark with a normalised cut-off. CS and ME often run in two sessions. M in the formula is the normalised mark.
  • Reading the rank band as AIR. It is a range. One extra mark at the busy part of the curve can move thousands of ranks in CS.

Where to confirm GATE 2026 figures

Organising institute pages and GOAPS are the source for Mq, Mt, normalised marks, and AIR. Start atgate2026.iitg.ac.infor GATE 2026 notices, and use the GOAPS portal for the scorecard. This calculator is an independent working sheet. It does not speak for IIT Guwahati, IISc, or TCS iON.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is GATE marks calculated from a response sheet?

Add full marks for every correct MCQ, NAT, and MSQ. Subtract 1/3 mark for each wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark for each wrong 2-mark MCQ. NAT and MSQ have no negative marking. Skipped questions score zero. GATE is 65 questions and 100 marks: 30 one-mark questions and 35 two-mark questions.

What is the GATE score formula out of 1000?

GATE Score = 350 + (900 − 350) × (M − Mq) ÷ (Mt − Mq). M is your actual or normalised marks, Mq is the general qualifying mark for that paper, and Mt is the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10, whichever is larger). Sq = 350 and St = 900 are fixed. The official score is rounded and kept between 0 and 1000.

What is the difference between GATE marks, score, and rank?

Marks are out of 100 from the paper (or normalised marks if the paper had more than one session). Score is the 0–1000 figure from the official formula, used by IITs, NITs, and many PSUs. Rank (AIR) is your position among candidates in that paper. The same marks can produce different ranks in CS and in a smaller paper.

Is there negative marking in GATE 2026?

Yes, only on MCQs. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 mark. A wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3 mark. NAT (numerical answer) and MSQ (multiple select) have no negative marking. MSQ needs every correct option; a partial selection scores zero.

How many questions are in the GATE exam?

GATE has 65 questions for 100 marks in three hours. That is 30 one-mark questions (30 marks) and 35 two-mark questions (70 marks). General Aptitude is 10 questions and 15 marks. The rest is the subject paper, including engineering mathematics where the paper includes it.

Do I use actual marks or normalised marks for the score?

Use actual marks if your paper was held in a single session. If the paper ran in more than one session, IIT publishes normalised marks and those go into M. Enter the figure from GOAPS or the official statistics, not a raw total from another shift.

What GATE score is needed to qualify?

In the official formula, a general candidate at the qualifying mark Mq is assigned a score of 350. OBC-NCL and EWS qualifying marks are 90% of the general Mq. SC, ST, and PwD qualifying marks are two-thirds of the general Mq. Qualifying is about marks versus that cut-off, not about rank.

Can I convert GATE marks to rank with this calculator?

You get an estimated AIR band from the score and how large that paper usually is. It is not the official rank. Rank depends on how everyone else scored that year. Use it as a range, then wait for GOAPS.

Will this match my official GATE 2026 result?

The marking scheme and the score formula match what IIT publishes. The result matches the official score only when your M, Mq, and Mt are the official figures. Default Mq and Mt here are typical starting values. Rank is always an estimate. This site is not affiliated with IIT or TCS iON.

Is the GATE marks calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, your response sheet is not uploaded, and there is no signup.

What this page will not pretend

The marking scheme and the score formula follow the GATE information brochure: −1/3 and −2/3 on MCQs, no penalty on NAT and MSQ, Sq = 350, St = 900. Default Mq and Mt are typical starting values so you can try the formula before official statistics appear. Rank is an estimated band. Nothing here allots an IIT seat, a PSU job, or an official AIR. The sum runs in your browser — the response sheet is not uploaded or stored.
