Semester-wise CGPA · up to 8 semesters
Tip: SRM weights semesters by credits, so a flat average can be off. Fill every Credits field for the official-style result your grade card would show.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your complete academic scorecard at SRM IST — one number on the 10-point scale that blends every semester you have finished, from first year to final year. Your semester SGPA tells the story of a single term; the CGPA tells the story of your whole degree so far.
At SRM this number carries real weight: it sits on your degree certificate, decides which placement drives you can sit for, and shapes MS-abroad and scholarship applications. Mass recruiters commonly ask for 6.0–7.0+, top-tier product companies usually want 8.0+, and you need a minimum of 5.0 with no active backlogs to graduate.
The process is the same whether you use the calculator above or a spreadsheet:
SRM IST computes CGPA as a credit-weighted average of semester SGPAs:
And each semester's SGPA comes from its subjects the same way:
Take a student with three semesters done. Marks straight off the grade cards:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.4 | 21 | 176.4 |
| Semester 2 | 8.9 | 22 | 195.8 |
| Semester 3 | 8.6 | 24 | 206.4 |
| Total | – | 67 | 578.6 |
CGPA = 578.6 ÷ 67 = 8.63.
For comparison, the flat average would be (8.4 + 8.9 + 8.6) ÷ 3 = 8.63here too — the numbers happen to line up this time, but with uneven credit totals they routinely diverge. Weighting is the only version that matches SRM's method.
The grade points the subject-wise tab uses, as commonly published for SRM IST:
| Grade | Meaning | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very Good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above Average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F | Fail / Arrear | 0 |
Clear backlogs quickly — a re-appeared pass replaces the F in your CGPA maths, so arrears drag you down only until you clear them.
Placement forms often ask for a percentage instead of a CGPA. The conversion SRM students most commonly use is:
Using our worked example: 8.63 × 10 = 86.3%. The generic × 9.5 shortcut would give ~82% instead — fine as a rough estimate outside SRM, but on anything official, use the conversion your recruiter or the placement cell asks for. The result panel above shows both figures side by side so you can never mix them up.
Yes. SRM's management programmes run on the same 10-point, credit-weighted system as B.Tech — only the credit totals and term structure differ. Enter your trimester or semester SGPAs with their credits exactly as described above and the calculation is identical. Just double-check your programme's credit totals from your own grade card rather than borrowing B.Tech numbers.
FAQ
SRM IST uses a credit-weighted average: multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s total credits, add those up, and divide by the sum of all credits. Semesters with more credits pull the final CGPA more. The semester-wise tab above applies exactly this method.
Collect the SGPA and total credits of every finished semester from your grade cards, enter them in the semester-wise tab (up to 8 semesters), and press Calculate CGPA. If you only know subject grades, use the subject-wise tab first — it builds one semester’s SGPA and can send it straight into the CGPA tab.
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted blend of all your SGPAs — not a flat average, because SRM semesters carry different credit totals. Enter every semester’s SGPA plus its credits above and the calculator weights them correctly. Leave credits blank only if you want a rough simple-average estimate.
SRM students commonly use Percentage = CGPA × 10, so an 8.63 CGPA is about 86.3%. The generic × 9.5 shortcut (8.63 → ~82%) is only an approximation used outside SRM. For placement forms, use whichever conversion the recruiter or placement cell asks for — the result panel shows both.
SRM IST follows a 10-point scale commonly published as: O (Outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P (Pass) = 4, and F (Fail) = 0. Multiply each grade point by the subject’s credits, total them, and divide by total credits to get the semester SGPA.
Yes. SRM’s management programmes run on the same 10-point credit-weighted system, so the maths is identical — enter your trimester or semester SGPAs with their credits the same way. Just confirm your programme’s credit totals from your grade card, since they differ from B.Tech.
The credit-weighted method shown here is the long-standing SRM approach and works regardless of regulation year, because you enter your own per-semester credits rather than relying on a hardcoded branch table. That said, always cross-check one result against your official grade card — regulations and credit splits can change by batch.
Probably not — several students have built their own SRM calculators and hosted them on Vercel over the years. They all implement the same public formula, so any of them should agree with this page to two decimal places. The advantage here is that everything runs locally in your browser with no signup, and the method behind your number is shown step by step.
You need a minimum CGPA of 5.0 with no active backlogs to graduate. For placements, mass recruiters typically ask for 6.0–7.0 and above, while top-tier product companies usually look for 8.0+. Scholarships generally need you to hold a strong CGPA throughout.
Completely. No signup, no limits, no watermark. It runs entirely in your browser, so your marks never leave your device.
This calculator implements SRM's published credit-weighted method and shows every step of your result, so you can verify it against your grade card in seconds. It deliberately avoids hardcoded branch-credit tables — you enter your own credits, so regulation and batch differences can't silently corrupt the answer. And because everything runs in your browser, your marks are never uploaded, stored, or tracked.
