Enter your SGPA

Pick your university formula · instant result

Found on your semester grade card (10-point scale).

Formula: % = SGPA × 9.5

Try:

Tip: × 9.5 is only the CBSE-style default. VTU, Mumbai University, and Anna University each publish their own formula — pick yours from the dropdown.

What Is SGPA to Percentage Conversion?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) scores one semester on a 10-point scale. Percentage expresses the same performance out of 100. Converting between them is just applying your university’s published mapping — a single multiplication (or a small linear formula) that translates the 10-point scale into marks out of 100.

The catch: every university picks its own mapping. An 8.0 SGPA is 76% under the common × 9.5 rule but 80% under Anna University’s × 10 rule. Same student, same semester, different official percentage — which is exactly why the calculator above asks for your university first.

How to Convert SGPA to Percentage

Whether you use the converter above or do it by hand, the steps are identical:

  1. Find your SGPA. Take it straight from your semester grade card (a number between 0 and 10).
  2. Find your university’s formula. Check your handbook or the table below — CBSE-pattern (× 9.5), Anna (× 10), VTU ((SGPA − 0.75) × 10), or Mumbai (7.1 × SGPA + 11).
  3. Run the numbers. Type the SGPA into the calculator, select the formula, and hit Convert to Percentage.
  4. Use the official figure on forms. For anything formal — placements, applications, affidavits — copy the number your university’s formula gives, not a generic estimate.

SGPA to Percentage Formulas

These are the most commonly published versions. Your handbook has the final word:

CBSE-pattern / Default (most quoted)

Anna University

VTU

Mumbai University

📘 Note: formulas can change between batches and schemes. If your grade card prints a conversion formula, that version always wins.

Worked Example: SGPA to Percentage

Say your SGPA is 8.2. Here is what each major formula gives:

FormulaCalculationPercentage
CBSE / Default8.2 × 9.577.90%
Anna University8.2 × 1082.00%
VTU(8.2 − 0.75) × 1074.50%
Mumbai University7.1 × 8.2 + 1169.22%

Same 8.2 SGPA, four different official answers — spanning almost 13 percentage points. Never borrow a friend’s formula from another university.

University-Wise SGPA to Percentage Rules

The methods most commonly published — regulations change by batch, so treat your handbook as the final authority:

UniversityPercentage formula often used8.0 SGPA →
CBSE-pattern / DU collegesSGPA × 9.576.00%
Anna UniversitySGPA × 1080.00%
VTU(SGPA − 0.75) × 1072.50%
Mumbai University7.1 × SGPA + 1167.80%
⚠️ Costly mistake to avoid: an 8.0 SGPA is 76% under × 9.5 but only about 67.8% under Mumbai University’s formula. Always convert with youruniversity’s formula on official paperwork.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using × 9.5 everywhere. It’s the most quoted shortcut, but VTU, Mumbai University, and Anna University officially use something else.
  • Confusing SGPA with CGPA input. The maths is the same on a 10-point scale — but make sure the number you type is actually the semester figure the form asks for, not your cumulative one (or vice versa).
  • Rounding too early. Convert with full precision first, then round the final percentage — early rounding can shift borderline cut-offs.
  • Skipping the official guidelines. Regulations change between batches and schemes. A five-minute check of your handbook beats redoing an application.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

Multiply your SGPA by your university’s factor. The most common shortcut is Percentage = SGPA × 9.5 (CBSE pattern). Anna University uses × 10, VTU uses (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, and Mumbai University uses 7.1 × SGPA + 11. Pick your formula in the calculator above.

What is the formula for SGPA to percentage?

There is no single national formula — it depends on your university. CBSE-pattern colleges use SGPA × 9.5, Anna University uses SGPA × 10, VTU uses (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, and Mumbai University uses 7.1 × SGPA + 11. Always confirm against your handbook.

How much percentage is 8.5 SGPA?

It depends on the formula. With the common × 9.5 rule, 8.5 SGPA = 80.75%. Under Anna University’s × 10 rule it is 85%, under VTU’s formula it is 77.5%, and under Mumbai University’s formula it is about 71.35%. That gap is why the university matters.

How much percentage is 9 SGPA?

With × 9.5, 9.0 SGPA = 85.5%. With Anna University’s × 10 it is 90%, with VTU’s formula it is 82.5%, and with Mumbai University’s formula it is about 74.9%. Select your university above for the exact figure.

Is SGPA × 9.5 correct for all universities?

No. × 9.5 is the widely quoted CBSE-style estimate, but VTU, Mumbai University, Anna University and others officially publish different conversions. Using × 9.5 everywhere can over- or under-report your marks by several percent on official forms.

What is the difference between SGPA, CGPA and percentage?

SGPA measures one semester on a 10-point scale, CGPA averages your whole degree so far on the same scale, and percentage expresses marks out of 100. Universities publish a mapping to move between the 10-point scale and percentage.

Can I use this calculator for CGPA to percentage too?

Yes — on a 10-point scale the same university formulas apply whether the input is an SGPA or a CGPA. Just enter the number and pick your university; the maths is identical.
